Aim

  • To measure the change in size of a number of bottles under pressure.
  • To measure the change in volume of a number of bottles under pressure.

Experiment Setup

The standard procedures were used to measure the dimensions and volume of 8 common bottles.

Conclusions / Analysis

  • Most of the bottles responded in a similar manner to being pressurised. At 120psi, 2L bottles increased by about 8mm in circumference,  lengthened by ~7mm and volume increased by about 170mL. At the same pressure 1.25L bottles increased their circumference by about 5mm, lengthened by 3mm and increased by about 70mL in volume.
  • After being pressurised to 120psi the bottles typically did not return to their original volume. The values given are the difference before and after pressurisation.
